T-shirt Fundraiser Provides Support to Victims of Domestic Violence During COVID-19

We Stand Together…Six Feet Apart T-shirts are being sold by members of MooreUnity to raise money for Forever Your Overwatch Foundation, a 501(c) (3) organization that provides support to people who are at risk of domestic violence.  Order your shirt here by May 15th givesignup.org/westandtogether.   All proceeds (after printing costs) will be donated.

Since the mandatory social isolation resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak, people who are victims of domestic abuse are in even more dire straits.  The World Economic Forum reports that the UN has projected three months of lockdown could result in 15 million cases of domestic abuse worldwide.

The Forever Your Overwatch Foundation is a local organization providing food and supplies to domestic violence shelters and survivors who are struggling with food insecurity during this time. They are also creating discrete “go bags” to those who are attempting to leave very abusive situations. These bags have a smart phone with minutes and security apps loaded, a panic alarm that alerts someone they are in danger, an Uber gift card, visa gift card, a safety plan, and anything specific to their situation.  For more information on Forever Your Overwatch, visit their website https://fyofoundation.org/

*While the primary goal is to raise money for charity, we would like as many people in Moorestown as possible to be able to have one of these shirts demonstrating our commitment to each other’s safety and health.  Due to a generous donation from an anonymous source, we will have a limited number available at no cost for anyone who is facing financial challenges.  Please contact mooreunity.nj@gmail.com to request assistance.

Project “Moorestown Send a Smile”

While home, consider making a card for one of our Moorestown older citizens who cannot get out.  They could use a little joy in the form of a card. Calling all artists!   We are hoping that any child or adult who wants to make a homemade card will do so!  This is a great art project for the younger students and a great way to teach empathy and show their support of the seniors in town.  Two collection bins are set up in town – one at the entrance to the Moorestown Library (111 W. Second Street) and one at 9 Sycamore Lane in Moorestown Hunt.

Important:  Cards can be store bought or homemade.   Cards must be able to fit into a 6 x 9 inch envelope.   Recommended size is folding a piece of 8.5 x 11 copy paper in half!

Tech Support

Hello MTPS Families!

As our schools shift into a state where staff and students are not present in the school buildings, technology tools can become even more important.  For some students, this is the first time their MTPS devices are coming home, and for some students they are using personal computers at home to participate in online activities.  This email offers some guidance to help you use the technology available to you as well as one way to get tech support.

MTPS 1-to-1 devices at home:

  • Grade 3 and 4 students (who took home an MTPS computer):
    • The MTPS computer is a Google Chromebook.  Power it on with the button in the upper right corner of the keyboard.
    • The first thing it will ask you to do is connect to a wireless network.  Choose your own home network’s name.  It may ask for a password as well.  Information about the network name and password might be physically attached to your wireless access point/router.
    • Once connected to your network, it will ask for a username and password.  This is your child’s Google username (which has @mtps.us at the end).  They likely already know it but If they don’t, you can log on to your Genesis Parent Portal with another device, and the “Google Username” and “Google Password” will be listed on the “summary” page of the student, just under their picture.
  • Grade 5 students (who took home an MTPS computer):
    • The MTPS computer is a Dell 3340 Windows 10 laptop.  Power it on with the button just to the right of the keyboard.
    • The first thing for the student to do is login.  This is their “plain” username WITHOUT @mtps.us at the end of it, and their current network password.
    • After getting logged in, you will want to connect to your wireless network.  Click the wireless network icon in the lower right corner of the screen, near the date/time.  A list of available wireless networks will appear.  Choose your own home network’s name.  It may ask for a password as well.  Information about the network name and password might be physically attached to your wireless access point/router.
  • Grade 6-12 students:
    •  you can log on to your MTPS computer at home the same way you have been doing throughout the year.

Internet access:

If your child has no access to the Internet where they are located, there are a couple of options that you can try.  MTPS administration is still working on additional options for families who responded to the survey.

  • Comcast/XFinity announced that their “xfinitiywifi” wireless hotspots will be free for the next 60 days.  However, it might not apply to ALL of their visible hotspots.  To try using it with your wireless laptop or tablet, go into its wireless list and find this network name EXACTLY:  “xfinitywifi” (there may be others that look similar, but aren’t the ones you want!)  Click/tap on that name.  If it works as expected, you should then be on the Internet and can browse as needed.  However, if an Xfinity login/payment/guest pass page comes up, then you are on a hotspot that apparently isn’t offering fully free wifi.  You can try the “guest pass” option, but it may limit you to only 1 hour of use.
  • Comcast Internet Essentials is offering 2 months of free service to new customers (and you can cancel anytime).  They do require families to meet certain criteria, one of which is free/reduced lunch status.  If you need Internet and think you have even a chance of qualifying, please visit their website and apply.  If you are not a customer and have questions about applying for Internet Essentials please call 1-855-8-INTERNET (1-855-846-8376).

Access to online resources:

MTPS has a wide range of online systems for which the students have their own accounts.  For the most part, these systems use a student’s Google username (with the @mtps.us) as the username and might use their initial Google password.  There are some exceptions, though – your teacher may have details, and if you have trouble logging into a system, you can reach out to MTPS technical support

For students using a personally-owned device at home:

Teachers may share information with you about the URL (web address) of online resources students will be using.  However, here are the URL’s of a few of the common resources USED BY K-5 GRADES IN PARTICULAR:

  • Journeys/Thinkcentral Language Arts:  https://www-k6.thinkcentral.com  You will need to choose the district and school from drop-down lists, and then logon with the student’s @mtps.us account and initial Google password.
  • Reflex Math:  https://www.reflexmath.com/ Students log in by choosing their teacher’s name, then enter their own password (initial Google password)

Remote Tech Support:

You might have a technical problem at home with the MTPS computer or with the online systems that MTPS supports.  The MTPS tech team can be contacted by students or parents for help.  Below are email addresses that are monitored by MTPS tech support personnel.  Email can be sent to these addresses anytime, and a tech team member will respond as soon as they can. MTPS will be setting up phone numbers for call-in tech support on 3/17.  Those numbers, and the times when they can be called, will be shared with you in the morning.

UES uessupport@mtps.com

One outcome of a tech support request could be that the MTPS computer needs to be brought in for repair and/or exchanged for a loaner.  If that is the case, the technician will follow up with you to let you know when and where the next in-person repair/exchange opportunity will be.

Thank you for your patience as the tech team continues to improve tech support for both families and staff members during this unusual time!

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Tomorrow morning, MTPS will begin our distance learning experience.  Over the next four weeks, the primary goals of our distance learning experience are to stay connected as a learning community, maintain a normal rhythm for our students, and keep our students academically engaged.

As with all new experiences, we expect there to be a learning curve for both our students and our faculty.  Please be assured that our faculty is committed to avoiding a negative academic impact on our students during this transition.  We are hopeful to return to our normal school experience soon, however, if our distance learning protocols need to stay in place longer, we will continue to update you with any adjustments and innovations we make in order to help everyone continue to succeed.

Assignments are flexible for your time and not tied to a specific time of day however, we would like work completed by 8 PM or otherwise communicated by the teacher. Guidelines for teachers are that assignments should take 30 minutes per subject. Students can complete work around your family’s schedule. Daily lessons will be uploaded prior to 9 AM each school day.

There will not be any assignments provided during the district designated Spring Break April 10- 17.

Guidelines for Students and Families: K-5

  • An email will come to each parent at 7 AM for attendance purposes. Please follow instructions to mark your child present for the day.
  • A series of learning experiences have been created for students by grade level.  These experiences are posted in Google Classroom and/or were made available to students via packets from teachers.
  • Teachers will be available between 9 AM – 1 PM to address questions and concerns online. Students should log onto Google Classroom to engage in questions. Teacher emails will also be used to respond to parent/student questions.
  • Parents should submit questions directly to their child’s teacher.
  • Should you or your child need assistance and have not heard from your child’s teacher within 24 hours you can also email your child’s principal.

Guidelines for Students and Families: Grades 6-12

  • Sixth Grade students ONLY will receive an email that will come to each parent at 7 AM for attendance purposes. Please follow instructions to mark your child present for the day.
  • Students should follow teachers’ instructions on their Google Classroom sites.
  • Students will be able to complete work on their own schedule but will have real time access to teacher feedback during “office hours” from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM each school day.
  • Students will receive feedback via Google Classroom from their teachers.
  • Students should be sure to hit “Submit” when completing assignments via Google Classroom.
  • Students should submit questions to teachers during designated class time via Google Classroom or email which is from 9:00 AM -1:00 PM.
  • Teachers will check email, give feedback on assignments, and/or respond to students’ comments and questions during designated “office hours” of 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM.
  • Timelines for marking periods will remain the same. All work completed will be included in the current/ future marking period as appropriately assigned and communicated by the teachers.

Please make sure your child has access to their teachers’ Google Classrooms and follows the digital learning calendar. Please remember that district devices and email accounts are only for school-related activities.

Please click on the link below for directions on how to access your child’s Google Classroom. For K-3 students, an email will be coming with your student’s access code.

If you are having trouble with School Messenger, please review the following page on our website:  http://www.mtps.com/for_parent/school_messenger

If you have not yet opted in for texts, please text the word ‘yes’ to 67587.    Be on the lookout for more detailed information from your building principal.

Stay well!

Special Message from Superintendent Scott P. McCartney, Ed. D.:

Dear Moorestown School Family,

This afternoon, Governor Murphy addressed the State with an update on the novel coronavirus COVID-19.  During his presentation, he announced that New Jersey now has 50 presumptive positive cases.  After a conference call with the Burlington County Department of Health, they have indicated that the cases have doubled in the last twenty-four (24) hours and that another presumptive positive case has been determined in Burlington County.  Based on this information and with the recommendation of the Department of Health, the Moorestown Township Public Schools, along with all Burlington County Public Schools, will close for students beginning this Monday, March 16 through April 17.  Tentatively, schools will reopen Monday, April 20, 2020.

The district will conclude its planning for instructional delivery, nutritional services and supplemental services on Monday, March 16.  Monday will be not be counted as an instructional day, but rather like an inclement weather day, meaning that May 26 will return as a school day.  Instructions on accessing materials and more detailed information will be accessible to you and your student by the close of the workday on Monday for instruction to begin on Tuesday.  Our building office staff and administration will be in the office Monday from 9:00 AM -1:00 PM should you have building or department specific questions or need to get personal items, medication, technology devices or materials from the school.

We recognize that there will be many different opinions about this decision, but to help us navigate this complicated process, please send only your specific questions to a dedicated e-mail box – COVIDquestions@mtps.com.

Here are some specific directives in the short term:

  • All student and school activities, clubs, and athletic programs will be cancelled during the dates listed above.
  • All outside use of facilities will be cancelled during the dates listed above.
  • Teachers will be able to receive e-mail and phone messages during the closure and will be communicating with you regarding daily instruction regularly.  As previously stated, more specific information on instruction will come from our staff via electronic communications on Monday and beyond.
  • Nutritional Services will be offered to our students eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch.  Families may access a Nutri-Serve Form via our district and school website.  The form must be submitted by 10 PM on Sunday night in order that Nutri-Serve can prepare the bag lunches for the week and have them ready at your home school.  Lunches will be available at the front of each school from 11:30 AM-12:30 PM.  If you have more than one child, lunches for all will be sent to the lower elementary school where your youngest child attends.
  • Special Education and 504 Supplemental Services will be managed by our Special Education Department and communicated to individual families.
  • If your home does not have Internet Accessibility, please contact your school on Monday so we may ensure your student has equitable access to instructional materials.

Please continue to check our District Webpage at www.mtps.com and look/listen for phone, text, social media and e-mail broadcasts from the district.  This is a very unique time for our schools, and truly all of us, so we appreciate your cooperation and patience as we navigate these significant changes.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

Scott P. McCartney, Ed. D.

Superintendent
